You are bidding on 12 BLACKJACK OAK ACORNS - Quercus marilandica marilandica. Synonyms: Quercus cuneata, Quercus nigra This species produces acorns every other year . Blackjack oak is also commonly referred to as 'scrub oak,' a reference to its stunted and gnarled appearance. It typically grows in nutrient-poor and excessively drained soils, which stunt normal growth. It is a small to medium sized deciduous oak of the red oak group that typically grows to a compact 20-40’ tall. It is native from New Jersey to Missouri south to Florida and Texas Common name is in reference to its leathery, obovate, blackjack-like, dark green leaves (to 7” long) that are widest at the apex which has 3-5 shallow, bristle-tipped lobes. Leaves are hairy and rusty-brown beneath. Foliage turns an undistinguished yellowish-brown to russet in fall. Fruits - Acorn production is biennial, with acorns maturing in October of the second year after pollination. They are oblong or roundish, approximately 3/4 in long, and about 1/2 inch in diameter. They are brown and often have vertical stripes. The cup covers one third to one half of the acorn and has loosely arranged scales. Zone: 6 to 9 Medicinal use of Blackjack Oak: An infusion of the tree bark coal has been taken to ease childbirth, remove the afterbirth and ease cramps. Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarrhea, dysentery etc. Edible parts of Blackjack Oak: Seed - cooked. Used in times of scarcity. The seed is about 2 cm long, it can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc or mixed with cereals for making bread. The seed contains bitter tannins, these can be leached out by thoroughly washing the seed in running water though many minerals will also be lost. The roasted seed is a coffee substitute. Other uses : Wood - heavy, hard, strong, close grained. See my store for 600+ seeds , live plants ( during the warmer months ) and over 300+ books on plants and gardening .
